May the 4th be with you — The Inaugral UP Game
Today is Civana Foundation’s 2nd birthday. In celebration, we launched the inaugural UP Game on Sound for Health. The UP Game is a place to leave behind limiting beliefs and play to win for all. We gather in order to design our shared future. We focus on playful cooperation, bringing together community leaders to reimagine and catalyze local solutions to planetary challenges. And, we aim to have as much fun as possible along the way.
Today, we gathered 22 community leaders in sound for health who cumulatively have over 432 years as practitioners of sound for the inaugural UP Game. This is based on an 8-hour exploration of a topic based on 4 hours of Yin (Being / Self-Mastery) and 4 hours of Yang (Becoming / Collective Action). On Thursday, we will birth our inaugural artefact called an UPGRADE. This is a memetic document that synthesizes 8 fundable solutions (UPLOADS) around ways sound can shape the future of our society. We plan to invite this to be shared widely — to media, funders, other contributors and partners. This Friday, we will be presenting this UPGRADE at a World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders summit.
Each week we will choose a new topic to focus the game on. Next week’s UP Game will focus on Food for Health, followed by Community for Health and so on. Each week we aim to gather diverse community leaders to explore how we can unleash our cooperative advantage.

We beleive that a game is an effective way to apply collective intelligence and collective action around systems change. Buckminster Fuller described this as the New World Game. The UP Game is one among many wonderful approaches to bringing a game to systems change. We are prototyping this strategy in real-time.

Ultimately, the UP Game aims to shine a light on community solutions to planetary challenges. We are creating a gamified container to accelerate transformative innovation. We believe this starts with funding communities to develop and deliver on their solutions. Our goal is to invite the greatest cooperation among community leaders as possible. We are seeking funding to offer each participant of the UP Game the ability to give away 1000 Stars (equivalent to $1,000 USD) to other players of the 8-hour game cycle.
We are partnering with and creating immersive online festivals to spread insights and invite more players. The UP Game launched on Earth Day 2020 (4/22) with a virtual festival with over 100 speakers, performers and practitioners across 4 ‘stages’ creating 32 hours of content. Our contributors included leaders such as Charles Eisenstein, Jamie Wheal, Amanda Sage, Daniel Schmachtenberger, Janet Stone. The content reached 75,000 through the live streams.
We have an exciting line up of content in the coming months outside of our weekly UP Games. We are curating 8 hours of live experiences at One Earth Live on 5/23–24 and will be interviewing artists such as Nahko and Ayla Nereo. We will be hosting a 3-day festival on 6/20–23 around World Rainforest Day and World Climate Change Day. We will then be hosting the Omniverse immersive experience for 8-hours a day for 8 days as part of Burning Man’s Multiverse on 8/30–9/06. We will create immersive game experiences for people to participate in playful ways to accelerate systems change.
Our intention is that the UP Game could create a decentralized United Nations for communities. We welcome your participation!
