Community Abundance — Water Day conversation from the future: #UPGrade 59
Water Day in the UP Game celebrates community and belonging. This UPgrade 59 highlights one of the communities that inspired the creation of the United Planet and UP Game.
My dear friend Heather Levine and I are speaking from the future about the transformative power of communities. “Examples from history are paving stones to the future. When my dad discovered the community in India with Baba Amte, he’d never seen community like it. There were these pioneering examples of these ancient future examples of living in community where everything was sourced locally and not a drop of water is wasted”.
My father met the legendary Baba Amte in India in 1964 and visited him every year for 44 years until the year before his death. He is now buried next to Baba in a garden called Joie de Vivre in Anandwan.
I was brought to tears when Heather asked me how my father would see the United Planet. I only had one word to say “Proud”. My father raised me with a deep awareness of the fragility of the planet and our resources as well as confidence that every part of our world can be transformed. He lived life as a great ancestor to the future and inspired me. I have utilised my inheritance from my father to finance the creation of United Planet. I have always felt a sense of honouring his legacy.
Anandwan is the largest community around leprosy and disability in India. I have been visiting the community many times since the age of 9. I consider it one of my spiritual homes. This is a story I wrote about it:
